I'd love to hear how you've applied these principles in your classroom! I am starting my first year of teaching this fall, and I am in love with this book, but I'm having trouble thinking of practical applications. Thanks!

No, but I've been to a video course with workbook (which I would recommend if you have the chance).
The concept of sharing control is very easy to apply once you get the hang of it. Think about all the classroom routines you will have to have, all the little rules and procedures you will have to have and decide which you care about. I'm in middle school and frankly, I don't care about 'pen or pencil', so I tell the kids that they can choose what to use, as well as manuscript or cursive. I've told the kids that we are going to play Bingo for 15 minutes to practice French numbers and that we are also going to do a number worksheet for 15 minutes. Which do you want to do first?
The 'I noticed that' is a miracle if you are consistent. You start to get a very good relationship with students you never thought you'd be able to stand.
I could go on. Read it again several times, go to Jim Fay's website and see when and where there is a class you could attend (mine was sponsored by my school district.)
Also get: The First Day of School by Harry Wong (wonderful!)
and Tools for Teaching by Fred Jones
I didn't discover these three books until the last few years and both by management and teaching have improved.

by Jim Fay and Foster W. Cline, M.D. ??? By teaching kids to learn from their mistakes and keepingmparents and kids out of power struggles and keepin parents calm and teaching kids to think for themselves?
and if so, does it work for you?
I am having a hard time, trying to get the concepts to sink in.

My aunt sent me the book. If you remain consistent in your reactions to bad or good behavior, it will eventually work. If you keep getting your kids out of trouble, they will be too needy when they are older; that's basically the main concept.

If you're consistent…it will work. Any time you do something different, it causes confusion and anxiety in your kid.

Dr. Charles Fay explains the importance of using empathy when delivering consequences to your kids or students. Love and Logic begins with empathy. For more information, visit www.loveandlogic.com or call 800-338-4065.
